چکیده
Aims. An asteroseismological study of PG 1159−035, the prototype of the GW Vir variable stars, has been performed on the basis of detailed and full PG1159 evolutionary models presented by Miller Bertolami & Althaus (2006). Methods. We carried out extensive computations of adiabatic g-mode pulsation periods on PG1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses spanning the range 0.530 to 0.741M⊙. These models were derived from the complete evolution of progenitor stars, including the thermally pulsing AGB phase and the born-again episode. We constrained the stellar mass of PG 1159−035 by comparing the observed period spacing with the asymptotic period spacing and with the average of the computed period spacings. We also employed the individual observed periods reported by Costa et al. (2007) to find a representative seismological model for PG 1159−035. Results. We derive a stellar mass in the range 0.56 − 0.59M⊙ from the period-spacing data alone. We also find, on the basis of a period-fit procedure, an asteroseismological model representative of PG 1159−035 that reproduces the observed period pattern with an average of the period differences of δΠi = 0.64 − 1.03 s, consistent with the expected model uncertainties. The model has an effective temperature Teff = 128 000 +8 600 −2 600 K, a stellar mass M∗ = 0.565 +0.025 −0.009M⊙, a surface gravity log g = 7.42 −0.12 , a stellar luminosity and radius of log(L∗/L⊙) = 2.15 ± 0.08 and log(R∗/R⊙) = −1.62 −0.09 , and a He-rich envelope thickness of Menv = 0.017M⊙ . The results of the period-fit analysis carried out in this work suggest that the surface gravity of PG 1159−035 would be 1σ larger than the spectroscopically inferred gravity. For our best-fit model of PG 1159−035, all of the pulsation modes are characterized by positive rates of period changes, at odds with the measurements by Costa & Kepler (2007).

Asteroseismic inferences on GW Vir variable stars in the frame of new PG 1159 evolutionary models
An adiabatic, nonradial pulsation study of GW Vir stars is presented. The pulsation calculations are based on PG1159 evolutionary sequences with different stellar massess artificially derived from a full evolutionary sequence of 0.5895 M⊙ that has been computed taking into account the evolutionary history of the progenitor star. The artificial sequences were constructed by appropriately scaling...

PG 1159−035 is the prototype of the PG1159 spectral class which consists of extremely hot hydrogen-deficient (pre) white dwarfs. It is also the prototype of the GW Vir variables, which are non-radial g-mode pulsators. The study of PG1159 stars reveals insight into stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis during AGB and post-AGB phases.
متن کاملThe gravitational wave radiation of pulsating white dwarfs revisited : the case of BPM 37093 and PG 1159 - 035
We compute the emission of gravitational radiation from pulsating white dwarfs. This is done by using an up-to-date stellar evolutionary code coupled with a state-of-the-art pulsational code. The emission of gravitational waves is computed for a standard 0.6M⊙ white dwarf with a liquid carbon-oxygen core and a hydrogen-rich envelope, for a massive DA white dwarf with a partially crystallized co...
متن کاملThe Boundaries of the GW Vir Stars in the Effective Temperature - Surface Gravity Domain
We derive the theoretical red edge of the pulsating GW Vir stars by using full evolutionary calculations that involve mass loss and diffusion. We put the emphasis on the fact that the specific mass loss law used in the evolutionary computations determines the red edge's position. By combining this specific property with the observed location of the red edge in the effective temperature-surface ...

Context. High-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopic observations of single hot white dwarfs are scarce. With the Chandra Low-Energy Transmission Grating, we have observed two white dwarfs, one is of spectral type DA (LB 1919) and the other is a non-DA of spectral type PG 1159 (PG 1520+525). The spectra of both stars are analyzed, together with an archival Chandra spectrum of another DA white dwar...
